The Power of Independent Research in Animal Welfare

"We believe that powerful science begins with  powerful questions"

What does the horse need?

Independent research in animal welfare stands apart because it doesn’t begin with industry priorities or academic agendas. It begins with compassion — with a commitment to the lived realities of animals and the people who care for them. It begins with a longing to understand, to prevent harm, and to restore dignity.

When research is led by those who walk alongside animals — who stay up late searching for answers when something still isn’t right — the questions change. We’re not asking how to extract more performance. We’re asking how to help. How to listen more deeply. How to honour the animal’s voice and lived experience.

This is what makes Etica’s approach different.

We’re not beholden to pharmaceutical sponsors, commodity outcomes, or academic advancement. Our only allegiance is to the horse — and to the caregivers who know, in their bones, that something is wrong despite exhaustive diagnostics and well-meaning treatment protocols.

They see the pain. They witness the distress. They’ve tried everything — and still, the answers don’t land. No one seems to be listening. And the question remains:

What happened? How do we keep it from happening again?

That’s where our research begins.

Etica exists to return the power to investigate — and to care — to those who are closest to the animal. We view science not as a tool of authority, but as a path toward ethical responsibility and truth-telling. And that makes it revolutionary.

If you’ve ever felt helpless in the face of an unanswered question about your horse...
If you’ve ever sensed that what you were being told didn’t match what you were seeing or feeling...
Then you already understand why this work matters.

This is science in service to the animal — and it needs grassroots support.
Because sometimes, the most important breakthroughs don’t come from the top down.
They come from the ground up.

Horses are not just a vesel for awards, but intelligent feeling beings that deserve a better life
