Not That Kind of Science
In conventional scientific studies, a problem is identified, a hypothesis is formed, and a controlled experiment is designed to test it—often with deliberately constructed "control" and "treatment" groups. The process seeks to isolate variables and draw conclusions from deliberate interventions.
But the Equine Pelvic Study is not that kind of science. We are not intervening for we
are listening.
Rather than asking what happens when we change something, we are asking: what has already happened? And what is the horse’s body trying to say about it? We are not using horses as experimental subjects, we are treating them as witnesses. Their bodies serve as living records of systemic breakdown. This approach is more closely aligned with a forensic and epidemiological lens, one that seeks not to impose, but to uncover. These horses are not statistical abstractions but living beings with bodies that carry the real, lived evidence of accumulated strain, shaped by early environmental pressures, management practices, and unrecognized developmental demands.
Through this study, we are carefully reconstructing the lived experience of the horse and the progression of pelvic collapse by tracking consistent changes in foundational bony landmarks—markers that serve as a living library of truth. These skeletal shifts function as a kind of structural epidemiology, revealing patterns of dysfunction that emerge not in isolation, but over time, across individuals and environments. They reflect deeper changes in posture, pelvic loading, and a wide spectrum of compensatory patterns and biomechanical strain.
In this way, the Equine Pelvic Study reimagines the role of science. It is not predictive,
but reflective. Not contrived, but integrative. It moves from a mechanistic model towards one that is investigative, relational, and responsive. It shifts the question from “what if?” to “what is?” and, perhaps more importantly, why?
And it reveals something vital: the body does not lie. When we learn to look through the right lens, the body tells the truth—not only about itself, but about the conditions that shaped it.
In doing so, this study invites us to listen more closely to what horse bodies are quietly revealing about the pressures of the lifestyles we ask them to live and the broader scientific, cultural, and economic systems that shape those demands. It leaves us questioning what we might learn about them and about ourselves—if we just listen and listen deeply?
